Brazilian Livestock Traceability: Strengthening Credibility and Boosting Global Trade

02/24/2025

Brazilian livestock farming has increasingly distinguished itself globally, thanks to the implementation of advanced technologies that ensure greater transparency and control throughout the entire production chain. In December 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) unveiled the National Plan for Individual Identification of Cattle and Buffaloes (PNIB)—a major step forward in enhancing traceability in the sector. This initiative will determine an individual identification system to monitor and record each animal’s history, current location, and full trajectory, from birth to the final consumer. With this action, Brazil underscores its commitment to food safety and transparency, positioning itself as a reliable and high-standard global beef supplier.
According to Tirso Meirelles, President of the Federation of Agriculture and Livestock of the State of São Paulo (FAESP), traceability has become a strategic imperative for the industry. “Traceability is not just a differentiating feature, but a necessity for Brazil to continue expanding its exports and tapping into new markets,” Meirelles emphasized.

What Is Traceability and Why Does It Matter?
Livestock traceability refers to the meticulous tracking of cattle from birth to the sales point, ensuring that every phase of the production process complies with international standards for food safety and animal welfare. The PNIB strengthens this process by creating a national database and enabling the individual identification of animals, which fosters increased trust and security in global markets. “Global consumers demand more than just quality; they seek clear guarantees about the origin of their beef and the practices involved in its production,” Meirelles explained.

Benefits for Producers and Consumers
Implementing traceability in Brazil not only eases access to high-demand international markets but also bolsters global consumer trust. For producers, the PNIB presents an opportunity to align with an innovative sanitary control system that increases credibility and transparency without imposing undue burdens on ranchers. For international consumers, traceability ensures a safer and more transparent supply chain, reinforcing trust in Brazilian beef. “This system boosts the credibility of Brazilian beef worldwide, reflecting the country’s commitment to sanitary, social, and environmental standards,” says Tirso Meirelles.

Impact on Brazil’s Global Competitiveness
As one of the world’s largest beef exporters, Brazil reaps significant benefits from traceability, which adds value to production and strengthens its competitive edge in global markets. The PNIB not only supports market expansion but also champions sustainable livestock farming, with a focus on pasture-based cattle production—a recognized method for producing carbon-neutral beef. “Our unwavering commitment to quality, transparency, and sustainability ensures Brazil’s leadership in the global beef market,” Meirelles concluded.
